Newtown, PA (November 28, 2007) As the holiday shopping season gets into gear and retailers hope to get into the black, one new website is aiming to help gift givers go green. GreenGiftScene.com is an online forum providing articles and blog postings about eco-friendly products that also make ideal gifts. The site’s founders search the web to find and review products from a variety of sources, then point readers in the right direction when they are ready to learn more.
According to the site’s co-creator, Owen Strouse, products considered appropriate for green giving fit into one or all of these categories:
- Products that have a reduced carbon footprint: an indicator of the environmental impact of carbon dioxide emissions from the production and shipping of goods.
- Imported products made under fair trade agreements that adequately compensate and protect the people and lands that produce them.
- Plant or animal based products and foods that are made from organic sources.
- Recycled products and those that reduce non-recycled waste that ends up in landfills.
- Energy and natural resource efficient products that yield a reduced carbon footprint and lower utility bills.
Reviewed products are categorized by intended gift recipient, making it easy for shoppers to find green gifts for everyone on their list, even pets.
“It’s amazing how much awareness has been raised about green living in the past year or so thanks to the efforts of a dedicated but relatively small group of people,” says Strouse. “What we’re trying to do is to help the movement become mainstream; to make green living a normal part of all of our lives right now. As we enter a season of high consumption, we’re hoping that people will think about the impact of the things they buy and maybe consider more responsible options.”
Strouse, head of website development company H&D Media, says the idea for GreenGiftScene.com originated from recent conversations with a few friends who are now collaborators on the site. “We’re all just regular guys with white-collar jobs, earning a good living, and not particularly political or involved in any social activism,” he says. “But this year, we’ve all become concerned about different environmental issues, either due to health consciousness, higher utility bills, or just a realization that our own consumption patterns are hurting the planet. For instance, one friend who drinks lots of bottled water was shocked to learn that up to 80% of the nation’s empties are not recycled and end up in landfills. So, he has switched to a new corn-based reusable bottle with a built- in filter, providing cleaner water and biodegradability in one. There are many neat products like this that we think deserve attention.”
While none of the site’s creators consider themselves experts on being green, they realized that, collectively, each had something worthwhile to contribute. Strouse states, “One friend is into organics and natural healthcare; a few others are very knowledgeable about home energy efficiency. Together, we really want to encourage friends, family, and hopefully the world to support the manufacturers that are doing the right thing for the earth and the people on it. For a movement like this to have a massive impact, all it takes is a lot of people making just a few small changes everyday. My friends and I are far from being 100% green, but we’re hoping that other people who are like us will get on board and use their wallet to help give the world back its future.”
